Rodrigo Possebon has not broken his leg, confirmed Manchester United after the Brazilian midfielder was stretchered off against Middlesbrough on Tuesday night following a challenge from Emanuel Pogatetz.

The Red Devils won the third-round Carling Cup tie 3-1 at Old Trafford, but the joy was marred by the injury, then suspected to be a broken leg, which also saw Boro captain Emanuel Pogatetz sent off.

On Wednesday morning, a club spokesperson told United’s official website: "We can confirm that Rodrigo did not suffer a break to his right leg. He was kept in hospital overnight for observation and to assess whether there was any ligament damage to his knee."

It was the 19-year-old central midfielder’s first start for the Red Devils following his January arrival from Brazilian club Internacional.
