Fergie Furious With Pogatetz Tackle

Sir Alex Ferguson has made known his disgust with Emanuel Pogatetz after the Middlesbrough skipper hospitalised Manchester United's Rodrigo Possebon with a horror challenge in last night's Carling Cup clash

United were victorious at Old Trafford, claiming a 3-1 victory thanks to late goals from star wingers Ryan Giggs and Nani.

But celebrations were marred by an ugly incident that occurred just after the hour mark, which resulted in Pogatetz being sent off and Possebon being rushed to hospital.

The United youngster had been about to control of a loose ball in midfield when the Boro left-back launched in with a two-footed, studs-first 'tackle'.

The 19-year-old Brazilian was sent flying through the air before collapsing in a heap and was given oxygen as he was stretchered from the pitch.

Ferguson said in The Sun: “It was a terrible tackle. I have seen a replay of it and I don’t want to see it again.

“It looked a bad one and he has gone to hospital.”

It was Possebon's first senior start for the Red Devils after making his debut as a substitute against Newcastle United on the opening day of the Premier League campaign.

The former Internacional midfielder impressed during pre-season and was expected to feature heavily in cup play this term, but now he looks likely to spend several months on the sidelines with a feared broken leg.

Ferguson added: “The kid was making his first start for us and to get an injury like that was pretty horrendous.

“For 10 minutes, I think everyone was numb and it killed the momentum in the game.

“The thing about these challenges is that the person who has done it always claims innocence. He should have walked straight off.”
