Ahead of the Champions League kick-off, Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Aiden McGeady was once a Man Utd target

Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that Celtic star Aiden McGeady could have been in the red of United as Champions League action kicks off this week, rather than the green and white Hoops of Celtic.

United apparently approached McGeady when he was a teenager, but he was hell-bent on signing for Celtic. The talented winger has since grown into a key man for both the Bhoys and the Republic of Ireland.

Fergie revealed: "We brought him as a kid to Manchester and we thought we were certain to sign him.

"His heart ruled his head and he signed for Celtic, but he's a talented young footballer, that's for sure."

He went on to reveal the difference in recruitment policy between England and Scotland: "We had McGeady and his parents down to discuss him signing for Manchester United when he was 14 or 15.

"We thought we had him buttoned up, but in England we have to wait until they are 16. Scottish clubs can tie them up when they're still at school."

Fergie, a legendary Aberdeen manager, was in Glasgow to cut the ribbon of Harmony Row Youth Club's new training facility. The Scottish boss is the club's patron.

Fergie did snatch a promising midfielder from Parkhead in 2004 in the shape of Liam Miller. The Irishman, branded a traitor by the Celtic faithful, failed to make a significant breakthrough at Old Trafford and eventually moved to Sunderland, where he is currently playing under former United and Celtic midfielder Roy Keane.
